electricfelix updates - Issue #2
Welcome back, for the second edition of electricfelix updates! After some weeks and thousands of kilometers in the Jaguar I-Pace and the BMW i3 it's time to talk about some of the things happening around us in the world of EV!
electricfelix blog
I've been writing, taking pictures and videos and doing lots of driving in the past weeks. Some of the results ended up in the blogs about my trip to Göteborg. Below links to Part I and Part II.
The way north with the I-Pace, summer storms and more.
How I got back home after visiting Sweden, more cheap charging on the way.
The Germany update
In Germany things are continuously changing fast. Last year saw the rise of Maingau with their fantastic charging card back then at 5 cents a kWh, this year Telekom (Get Charge) came with 2 cents per kWh, and then it went a bit quiet (and tariffs went up/became normal). Maingau now upped their prices which creates quite the uproar in Germany, even though still fair, the 'cheap charging in Germany' is slowing down. Or is it? (See below!)
Eins e-mobil
Thanks to my favourite Dutch e-mobility blog, by Maarten Hachmang aka Hachy, I can tell you a bit more about one of the newest charging apps that arrived on my phone: Eins e-mobil. You can download the app right away, after sign up I'm still hoping to receive a charging card but that didn't arrive yet (seem to be overwhelmed by sign ups, out of stock!). What's special about the app is that any Allego AC/DC (yes also the HPC's that seem to finally start working around Europe) supported charger will do a full charging session for five euros. With the newest cars and bigger batteries, this of course makes for a great deal in many locations. I already used it so I can confirm it's real. Even though I'm guessing it cannot stay like this for a long time. Enjoy while it lasts!
HPC expansion
Articles like this one about STAR 'tankstelle' in Germany, show that we are in for a treat when talking about HPC's being rolled out in some of the European countries. In the UK BP is taking the lead. Shell is already ahead in France and Ionity keeps opening more stations, even though it's not in time for this summer holiday season completely. Ionity as per the beginning of August '19 in 'Central Europe':
My own list on Google Maps as shown above, contains any 100+kW charger that I know of in Europe. Mostly thanks to the Next Plug app, that gets data from goingelectric.de as you can see. Yeah, I spent many nights just looking at the map, thinking of where to go next ;-]
Obviously it also shows the big differences for example between Germany and France. And the big areas where there is still work to do. But it looks good right!
Schnäppchen
Yes, that's German for a sweet deal. Right now it's possible to charge for 5ct/min at Ionity and 8ct/min at Allego. Also at high speeds! (I've already been testing this since last week). The rumours have been going around the internet for a while, maybe you heard it already. But if not, download the Swisscharge app right away. Or in my case, I use a party that has the same prices and backend, Virta. I got a prepaid card there a long time ago already, and it's super useful right now. They are also the only ones that sent me a key fob and a 'full size' RFID charging card. Which I like as a special service.
I'm only pushing out this newsletter right now for this pricing update, because who knows how long this deal will last. For now I wish you a pleasureful journey and I will be back later in August with a full newsletter!
EV travel advice (PDF)
Of course you can still follow the link to request advice for your travels. Since I've been from Göteborg to Madrid by now, I can share quite some tips and tricks. Just follow the link and tell me where you wish to go!
When you request advice for UK/France/Spain/German based roadtrips I will include my PDF per country that I made with charging card advice and some advice on the cities where I've been, and so on.
Donate
Yes, it's possible to donate to keep electricfelix on the road! I wish to do many more discoveries and tell you about them, some of them I will find online but others will be out there in the real world! Follow the link to help me out, so I can write more charging guides per country, do more videos and push out newsletters with crazy pricing updates that will hopefully keep this EV world going fast!
Sponsors
Even though I love to rely on myself and myself alone, riding the Jaguar (or any other EV vehicle) around Europe will never be completely free. If you are looking forward to more guides, more blogs, more updates in the form of this newsletter, I am always open to donations. Just a Ionity charge is already getting me another 250km, so it doesn’t have to get crazy! Also I’m always open to talk about sponsorships, a banner, a blog about your shop/vehicle/website - if it’s useful to the EV drivers and interested people out there, we can talk! Find me on twitter.com/electricfelix or just sent me an email at [email protected]
Feedback
I would love to hear what you think, about the website, the blog, this newsletter, the PDF guides, what are you missing, how can I help you drive further, faster, and for less money! Let me know what you think, a reply on this newsletter is also possible of course. See you on the road!
